Our time in Montana is quickly and sadly coming to an end. We had a great time the last six weeks, especially the time we spent in the northwest corner. If Idaho had their way, they would probably annex this area. 40% of the folks in the campgrounds are from Idaho with another 40% from Canada. We have seen a smattering of people from a few other states and even met a couple in Yaak from Holland. Many folks from Montana seem to be hauling both a fifth wheel trailer and a boat. The first time we saw one of these 70 foot long behemoths, we were amazed. That would be illegal in most states! You can pull a trailer pulling a trailer with just a private vehicle license? Bless Montana's heart.
We spent our last days in Montana near the confluence of the the Yaak River and Kootenai River. We spent a few days each morning and evening fishing. One morning we managed to catch four different kinds of fish. I caught a cutthroat trout and Shawn caught a brook trout, rainbow trout, and a mountain whitefish. And that was all on the same 50 foot section of the Yaak river. We had another surf and turf dinner…our favorite! I did fall down in the river but did not lose any skin (and have not for three weeks!). Shawn finally fell in the river our last night here (hee, hee). He also got “fly fisher’s elbow” and “fly fisher’s wrist” from fishing too much. He needs to get into better fly-fishing shape!
During the day we went hiking and water fall viewing. The falls around here are pretty impressive due to the spectacular clear green water and the belt rocks (Mary would be so proud of me). One section of the Yaak falls slides down a 60% gradient rock ledge for about 70 feet undercutting the rocky bank. You can lie over the edge and feel the spray on your face, but based on personal experience you get a feeling of vertigo from the enormous amount of cascading water pounding against the rocks.
The Kootenai Falls were even more spectacular given that the river has 15,000 cubic feet of water flowing per second. We just love waterfalls! We could spend hours listening and watching – it is so mesmerizing like watching a fire.
Our trip to Montana left us with amazing memories, but it’s time to head back to Washington. Somebody has made an offer to buy the house! If all goes smoothly, we will be on the road full time by September or October. We appreciate your payers and good wishes. Look for occasional reports as we take side trips in Washington.
